Founded in 1982, the American Medallic Sculpture Association (AMSA) works to encourage the creation, study and appreciation of the American Fine Art Medal.
All who are interested are welcome as members. Our goal is to increase awareness of medallic sculpture, to assist artists, collectors and scholars alike in their quest to share and disseminate knowledge of this “hand held” form of artistic expression.
The purpose of the American Medallic Sculpture Association (AMSA) is to encourage the creation and study of medallic sculpture in North America. All who are interested are welcome as members. Our aim is to disseminate information and add impetus in making medallic sculpture a vital and viable art form in this country.
Since its founding in 1982, AMSA has sponsored a series of programs to encourage the development of medallic art in the United States and Canada and provided opportunities for communication among artists, commissioners, producers, collectors and scholars of the medal.
AMSA sponsors a full range of activities for its membership and the public with communication, interchange of information and opinions focusing on artistic, technical, aesthetic, commercial and even political aspects of medallic art which has created a true medallic community. Its periodic workshops and conferences, at various locations throughout the continent, have enlarged this community to reach many members who work at a distance from major artistic centers. The newsletter "Members Exchange" serves as a network of information for all members. With its new web site, AMSA moves into the technology of today's information age and extends its ability to reach its audience.
Exhibitions of medallic art have been the principal means by which AMSA has brought the work of American medallists before the public eye. Major exhibitions in art museums, galleries, and numismatic museums around the country have introduced many art lovers to the aesthetic possibilities of the medium. By participation in the biennial congress and exhibitions of the International Medal Federation (FIDEM), AMSA members have found a world-wide audience for their work and get exposed to international approaches to medallic art.
