Marie Jean Lederman

BIO

I studied art at Cornell University School of Architecture and Fine Arts, the Art Students League and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. My Ph.D. in English is from New York University, and I am Professor Emerita from Baruch College of The City University of New York. I have written about literature, film, theater and art, and I have exhibited in group shows both nationally and internatioally. These include the National Sculpture Society's 2000 Annual Exhibition, the National Academy of Design's 175th Annual Exhibition, the Canadian War Museum, the Gardiner Museum and numerous FIDEM and AMSA exhibitions.

Statement

All my life I have made art with words, clay, metal and found objects. In any medium my work reflects the way I see the world and myself. Each of us brings to our art all that we observe, feel, value, fear and love. As a professor of English my teaching was infused with my interests in art, film and theater. Always I spent as much time as I could in a sculpture studio. Since retiring from academia I have moved from sculpture to reliefs to art medals to wearable sculpture.
