Call for Contemporary Medals

In 2026, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War. All 13 original original states will have Rev’ 250 commissions established, with several events planned around this defining point in the nation’s founding.

To mark this milestone, AMSA members are invited to submit contemporary medals referencing some aspect of the Revolutionary War for a special, members exhibition. Photos and images are encouraged, and should be sent to Mel Wacks at numismel@aol.com for sale during the exhibition and a possible poster. This will be our first exhibition in quite some time, so we encourage participation.

Suggested Themes & Subjects

The Revolutionary War offers a wide range of possible themes and narratives. Artists are encouraged to explore both well-known and lesser-told stories. Some suggested themes include:

  • Portraits (patriots & loyalists)
  • Signers of the Declaration of Independence
  • Flags & symbols
  • Army equipment & uniforms
  • Battles
  • Ships & naval history
  • Medicine of the period
  • Food of the time
  • Slavery
  • Native Americans
  • Noted women of the time

Show Dates

  • May 17 – August 2, 2026 (Reception: May 16) at ArtsWestchester
  • August – October 2026 (possibly November) at Philipse Manor Hall

ArtsWestchester is the umbrella arts organization for Westchester County, New York. The exhibition will be held in a large, decommissioned bank space and will be part of a broader arts exhibition commemorating Rev’ 250. Display cases will be provided.

Philipse Manor Hall is a New York State historic site. The Philipse family were prominent figures in the region during the Revolution period and were Loyalists. The site regularly hosts lectures, performances, conferences, and school visits. The site director is enthusiastic about including both contemporary and historic medals in the exhibition. Display cases will be provided.

Number of Medals

  • The goal is to exhibit at least 30 – 40 contemporary medals, along with loaned historic medals, to make a strong statement for AMSA
  • 1 – 3 medals will be accepted per artist, depending on the number of participants

Size & Materials

  • Medals may be made of any material
  • Maximum size: 150mm

Title & Description

  • The title should reference the image on the medal. For example: “Battle of White Plains”, “Benjamin Franklin”
  • Please include a brief explanation of the medal’s meaning in 1 -3 sentences

Entry Fee

  • $35 for 1 – 3 entries per artist
