Bio

Tracy Mahaffey was born and raised in Howell, New Jersey. In 1993 she received a BFA in studio arts with a sculpture concentration from Kutztown University, in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. In October 2000, Tracy moved to Rhode Island to practice memorial arts and brought her knowledge of sculpture and relief to hand carved gravestones. Tracy has been a professional stone carver and sculptor now for twenty-five years. The concentration of her work has been hand carved memorials and gravestones, as well as inscriptional architectural carvings. Her memorials work can be seen in some of the finest cemeteries across the United States.

Though stone is her first love, Tracy has been exploring other materials such as clay and cast
metals. This is highlight by her recent studies and practice of medallic art, an art form that she believes is even more under appreciated than memorial arts. The smaller scale of medallic work allows Tracy to create more intimate, commemorative work in such versatile materials as terracotta, bronze, and zinc. Tracy says, “In my career my art has been inspired and created through the study of people and their lives, and now I want to study and commemorate, memorialize you can say, things such at the unseen or unheard that make up the background of our lives.”

Her lettering and sculptural work has been published many times in “Letter Arts Review.” She is also a member of the National Sculpture Society and the American Medallic Sculpture
Association. Tracy lives, works, and plays in a cat sanctuary in Greene, Rhode Island.
